Bunker's personal reminisces of being a wartime merchant marine make the volume a historical memoir, capturing more of the courage and bravery of the merchant seaman than other accounts. The author covers pre-war challenges, and battles in the north Atlantic, central and south Atlantic. Much of the volume, however, is preoccupied with war stories, the man who refused to die and we won't surrender without a fight is a sampling of chapter subject titles which indicates the direction of the subject matter.
