Preparing to Teach Mathematics with Technology: An Integrated Approach to Geometry is the second in a series of textbooks prepared through research and development funded by the National Science Foundation at North Carolina State University. This textbook focuses on the teaching and learning of several foundational geometry topics amenable to the use of technology. Our approach integrates teachers learning of mathematical ideas, pedagogy, and technology skills in order to prepare teachers for the challenges of teaching with technology in mathematics classrooms. The technology tool used in the book is The Geometer's Sketchpad (version 5).
Each chapter contains information about issues of learning and teaching with technology, including some specific directions for skills needed in a technology. Some technology directions are also given along the left-hand border as Tech Tips. There are many opportunities for teachers to engage in doing geometry tasks with technology in questions labeled Focusing on Content, typically followed by opportunities to discuss specific pedagogical issues in the Considerations for Teaching questions. Throughout the book, there are video clips of students and teachers working with dynamic geometry tools and tasks. These clips provide several opportunities to discuss students' thinking and pedagogical decisions a teacher can make when using dynamic geometry tools in classrooms. Each chapter includes a bibliography of sources, a list of suggested articles for assigned readings, and several suggested homework assignments.
