Rangeley Lakes Region: Maine, Umbagog Lake to Rangeley Lake (Trail section 8): This playground of large connected lakes (Rangeley, Mooselookmeguntic, the Richardsons and Umbagog) has been popular for fishing since mid-1800s, hitting its heyday of grand hotels, steamships and railroads in 1920s. Wildlife lovers will especially enjoy the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, a renowned birdwatching area on the New Hampshire/Maine border where you'll see bald eagles, loons, peregrine falcons, ospreys and more.
