Iranian filmmaker, director, screenwriter and photographer Abbas Kiarostami (born 1940) first came to prominence with his film work in the 1970s, going on to win international acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s with Where Is the Friends Home?, And Life Goes On and Through the Olive Trees. Images, Still and Moving is devoted to Kiarostamis decidedly painterly photographic work, which, unlike the haunting explorations and evocations of human experience in his films, tends to focus primarily on untouched landscape. Kiarostami trained as a painter at Tehran University School of Fine Arts, and his photographs have been the subject of large-scale solo exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. With 50 reproductions in color, Images, Still and Moving explores the correlations between Kiarostamis photographic and filmic visions.
