Lipstick and High Heel Shoes: Survival in the Tanami Desert

In the late 1950s Narelle Newton with her companion Steve Borbely set out from Cairns in Far North Queensland to drive around Australia looking for somewhere to settle down permanently together. They eventually worked their way around to Broome in North West Western Australia. At possibly the worst time of year they decided to drive their Holden Sedan across one of the most desolate sections of the Australian continent to Katherine in the Northern Territory. The spoiled city girl and her capable companions vehicle broke down in the Tanami Desert and only their will to live and a great deal of good fortune saw them survive this ordeal.
