Authors

Grant Wiggins is the President of Authentic Education in Hopewell, New Jersey. He earned his Ed.D. from Harvard University and his B. A. from St. John's College in Annapolis. Grant consults with schools, districts and state education departments on a variety of reform matters; organizes conferences and workshops; and develops print materials and Web resources on curricular change. He is the co-author, with Jay McTighe, of Understanding By Design and The Understanding By Design Handbook, the award-winning and highly successful materials on curriculum published by ASCD. His work has been supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the National Science Foundation.

Dan M. Shea Ph.D. - Program Author

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the State University of New York at Oswego, Daniel M. Shea received his Master of Arts degree in Campaign Management from the University of West Florida. He then worked as regional coordinator for the New York State Democratic Assembly Campaign Committee. He returned to graduates school and by 1993 received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the State University of New York at Albany.

William A. McClenaghan

William A. McClenaghan is a Professor Emeritus at Oregon State University, where he taught for 45 years. A student of Frank Magruder's, he began work on the book in the summers of 1946, 1947, and 1948. He assumed authorship in 1949 and updated the text yearly since that time, continuing the tradition of excellence and dedication to civic education begun by Frank Magruder almost 100 years ago.

Jane Wilcox Smith
Jane Wilcox Smith received her Master of Arts in teaching as a reading specialist from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She taught basic reading skills at the Schenck School in Atlanta, and remedial English and reading skills at Forsyth Central High School in Cumming, Georgia. She serves on Emory University s Woodruff Library s Special Collection Board.
