When the Old West was new and unsettled . . . The Comanche Indians had been forced onto the reservation. The large herds of buffalo were gone. The open range of large ranches was coming to an end. This left millions of state-owned acres to be claimed for homesteading. The settlers were required to develop the land and live on it for three years. This is where the twenty-one-year-old Clay Long found himself when he left his home and family near Waco, Texas, seeking a place to plant his feet.
