The Newark Earthworks: A Wonder of the Ancient World

The Newark Earthworks truly are a wonder of the ancient world. Built by the Hopewell culture nearly 2,000 years ago, this monumental ceremonial center included two giant circular earthworks, an octagonal enclosure, a square, and numerous small circles, mounds, and parallel-walled roads. The Ohio Historical Society preserves three remnants of this ancient architecture: the Great Circle Earthworks, Octagon Earthworks, and Wright Earthworks. This guidebook explores what archaeologists have learned about this magnificent site and the remarkable people who built it. The booklet is profusely illustrated with historic maps of the site, photographs of artifacts found there, and a diagram showing how the site is aligned to the rising and setting of the moon.
