Mott B. Schmidt, one of the last masters of traditional domestic architecture, practiced in New York from 1912 to the 1970s. In his long and distinguished career, he created many sumptuous residences in his trademark American Georgian style for the city's society and business elite. The architect of the Susan B. Wagner Wing of Gracie Mansion, Sutton Place, and numerous townhouses for the Vanderbilts, the Astors, the Morgans, the Rockefellers, and others, Schmidt brought refined elegance and grace to each of his works. This is the first book to document Schmidt's life work. One chapter is devoted to each of his major projects and is illustrated with detailed photographs. A sixteen-page color portfolio of new pictures specifically made for this book is also included.
